About

Lisa Nicchi (she/they) is a creative and an educator living in Brooklyn, New York. She creates in the mediums of painting, drawing, movement, and writing. Lisa earned their MFA at New York Academy of Art, focusing on Painting and Printmaking.

Through the process of monotype and authentic movement, Lisa discovered the intuitive depth that quickness in creating cultivates. With inspiration from dancing, an initial mark is made --a gesture of intuitive turns of the arm and wrist. They stand back to see what emerges, depicting this as the image reveals itself to the artist.

These paintings are a nod to surrealist techniques, displaying the artist's emerging feelings through the surrender to the subconscious. Lisa's works explore themes of intimacy, queerness, conflict, masking, movement, and the bizarre. They unveil themselves to be discovered.

Teaching

In addition to art-making, Lisa is a professor at St. John's University in Queens and Borough of Manhattan Community College in Manhattan.

Lisa also teaches a class she created called Drawing + Movement. The vision for this class is to guide folks through an intuition-based, creative, and somatic movement practice.

Awards

She has won a few awards, including the Grace K. Swanson Award of Distinction in Painting and the Academy Scholar Merit Award from Loyola Marymount University. Lisa also received the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Award from New York Academy of Art upon graduating.
